Just a light Costco trip this week:
3 qt heavy cream, $2.79/qt
4 lb bacon, $2.72/lb
6 lb frozen organic blueberries, $3.86/lb
3 lb raw almonds, $10.99
26 oz almond butter, $5.99
2 lb cheddar cheese, $4.99
60 oz mustard, $3.09 sale
4 pk sardines in evoo, $6.49 sale
Total $74.76
Most sardines I've found are packed in soybean oil, which is heavily refined. Most soybean oils contain some level of dangerous trans fat and ought to be avoided. These sardines are wild-caught and packed in extra virgin olive oil, so it was worth it to pay a little extra. Keith tasted and approved, saying the evoo helps calm the strong taste sardines sometimes have. If they are still on sale next time, we'll probably stock up!
Mustard is also a good price this time of year because it's "grilling season". It's our most commonly used condiment, usually made of just vinegar and spices.
Almond butter is a great choice over peanut butter. It can be very expensive at grocery stores, $10 or more for a smaller jar. $5.99 isn't bad for 26 oz.
Raw nuts are a better choice over roasted, since roasting nuts turns them rancid (trans fat). And this is the best price I've found at $0.22/oz. We fill smaller containers and keep them refrigerated. They stay crunchy and delicious throughout the entire bag. These are great for on-the-go snacks!
