Ovis Hill Shopping

There are many great benefits to eating grass-fed meats and dairy products, one of the biggest being the significantly higher omega-3 (anti-inflammatory) fatty acids. More expensive? Yes, but, did you know that we spend less than any other society in the history of the world on food? We only spend 10% of our disposable income on food, compared to 20% in 1950. Seems like there has been a real shift in priorities. Cheap food does not come without consequence. We are more overweight and have more heart disease than ever. Sick cows eat grains. Healthy cows graze on green grasses. It's that simple. I think it's time we took back our health, and purchasing pastured meats and dairy from your local farmer is a great start!

We are so happy we've been able to find grass-fed meats from good folks in South Carolina! We purchase most of our meats from Ovis Hill Farm out of Timmonsville. They work with other local farmers to provide healthy and clean meats, dairy, and produce.  We have purchased a meat share, which is like purchasing a quarter cow, only we get to spread the cow over 6 monthly pickups. This works great for us since we don't have a lot of freezer space. We are also saving a lot of money this way since we are paying a flat rate for all the beef, whether it's hamburger or steaks. Ours comes out to $93 per month for 16-18 lbs of pastured beef, or $5.49/lb. We don't eat this much beef in a month, so I'm sure we'll have plenty left after 6 months. We don't mind, this meat tastes awesome! And, by purchasing the meat share, we get an additional savings on all our other purchases from the market, including the grass-fed dairy, other pastured meats, and organic veggies. You know I'm all about a discount! The dairy comes from Happy Cow Creamery out of Pelzer, SC. The milk is low pasteurized, which means more enzymes are left in the product, making for easier digestion. This milk has recently tested higher in nutrients than the previously highest rated grass fed organic dairy in the US! It is the best milk I have ever tasted! Today, we picked up 6 dozen eggs, 2 lbs butter, garlic brats, 1 gal whole milk, organic lettuce, chicken livers, and 17.5 lbs of beef (roasts, ribs, hamburger, and FILETS!). Total cost was $150.45.

    1. It can take time to find the right farm, but don't give up! Have you checked on http://www.localharvest.org/? Look under the CSA or Farms tabs. That's where we found our produce man. Also try http://eatwild.com/. This is where we found our meat farmer. You can also have meats delivered right to your door. Though I haven't ordered from them yet, I have read lots of good things about U.S Wellness Meats. http://www.grasslandbeef.com/StoreFront.bok?affiliate_no=654. May be worth checking into if you're having a hard time finding local meats. Good luck and let us know if we can help! (For some reason I wasn't able to make those into links.)
